I’ve worked with so many people over the past few years, and most of us seem to have a tremendously hard time wrapping our brains around that fact that we are worth taking care of. We are worth putting our own happiness and self-care right up there with everything else on our to-do list! Seriously!!

I speak from experience. I used to sacrifice everything for my family. I felt they needed me there all the time and I was completely deficient in happiness, pleasure, time for myself, overall well being and health. I was miserable. I was happy at times, but deep down, I was suffering for it.

I think that HSP’s in particular have a difficult time asking for what we need and setting boundaries because we care so deeply about other people’s happiness, so we put ourselves in situations that may not be what we truly want, or in situations that drain our energy. We might also sacrifice what we truly want or fail to put up the boundary because we don’t want to feel their emotion, whether it’s disappointment, anger, sadness, etc. So many of us are empaths and can feel what others are feeling. This is so uncomfortable for us that we love avoiding the discomfort of this! We will very often stay in situations that are hurting us just to avoid hurting someone else.

We all need self-care and boundaries. Each and every one of us. Some of us believe that it’s selfish to put ourselves first. I want to scream it from the rooftops: Self-care is the most selfless thing you can do! It benefits every single person around you. When you are functioning at an optimal level, or even a little bit better than you are right now, you are better at everything you do. A better partner, friend, father, daughter, son, daughter, boss, employee…you get the idea.
