Architectural Review
Established in 1964 and encompassing a National Historic Landmark District of “exceptional quality” and national significance, Mount Vernon-Belvedere is Baltimore’s first historic district, and the Gilded Age-era architecture contributes to the neighborhood’s popularity as a place to live and visit. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) works closely with property owners and developers to uphold the highest design and construction standards and to help them understand the nuances of working on historic structures or new construction in the district.
All exterior work or new construction in Mount Vernon requires review and permits before commencing. The ARC recommends that property owners contact the committee by e-mail early in the process to discuss planned scope of work before contractors or architects are hired so that potential pitfalls can be avoided.
Since the year 2000, the Architectural Review Committee has reviewed over 4,500 projects, and the committee members include professionals with a wide range of expertise. The daily work of the ARC includes:
o Advising property owners on every plan of exterior work or improvement, and working closely with owners to find appropriate and cost-effective solutions that comply with historic guidelines and regulations
o Meeting on an ad hoc basis to address more complex issues and major projects in a timely manner
o Advising property owners on the city CHAP permit review and approval process
o Advising property owners on reputable contractors and design professionals
