Upcoming MVBA November Elections:A Call for Committee Members andThose Interested in Running for Election Members Who Would Like to Serve on the Nominating Committee for Upcoming MVBA Elections: We currently have three board members who have agreed to serve on the Nominating Committee, and we would like to recruit at least two more people from our membership at large, to join us. If you are an active MVBA member and would like to serve on the Nominating Committee please email us as soon as possible at nominations@mvba.org. Positions That Need to Be Filled in the Upcoming MVBA Elections:As of now, there are three positions to fill: President, and 2 board positions. The President’s term is for two years, while board members serve three years. If you would like to run for any of these positions, and you are an active MVBA member, please send a short bio to the Nominating Committee at nominations@mvba.org and the Committee will schedule an interview with you. By the MVBA bylaws, all potential candidates on the Board’s slate must be picked by the October General body meeting which takes place on October 18th, as all candidate’s Bio’s must be placed in the October Newsletter. The Election will take place at our general membership meeting Tuesday, November 15th. We look forward to hearing from any members interested in either of these important efforts. Change of Recycling Location for the 1200 Block of St. Paul Street
Beginning Tuesday, August 30, 2016, Baltimore City will no longer collect recycling from the front of the buildings in the 1200 block of Saint Paul Street. This change in location applies to all units on the west side of Saint Paul Street between Biddle and Preston streets. Starting August 30th, recycling will be collected in the rear of the buildings — where you currently put out your trash. Please place your recycling in the recycling bins, or any type of bin marked “Recycling.” Do not use the new green City trash bins for recycling. That will not be picked on recycling day. They are for trash only. And please remember to not put your recycling in plastic bags. Chase Brexton Farmer’s Market Fridays and Charm Ball Fundraiser
Real Food Farm’s Mobile Farmer’s Market truck will be parked on Chase Street (between Chase Brexton and the Belvedere Hotel) every Friday from now through December, from 11:45-12:45. The entire neighborhood is welcome to stop by and pickup their fresh produce. Free street festival! On Friday, September 16th, in Baltimore and cities around the globe, architects, landscape designers, artists, and citizens will transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks and other social spaces, as part of an annual event called “PARK(ing) Day.” Initiated in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK(ing) Day invites people to rethink the way streets are used and promotes discussion around the need for broad- based changes to urban infrastructure. There will be pop-up parks all over the city, including many in Mt Vernon. Visitors will be encouraged to share their experience using the hashtag#BmoreParkingDay. The event is a citywide celebration of architecture that invites the public to Explore Baltimore’s diverse architecture and neighborhoods and meet the extraordinary people who design, build, preserve and carry out amazing work in the city. Doors Open Baltimore is the culminating event of Baltimore Architecture Month. The goal of Doors Open Baltimore is to promote a greater appreciation of the built environment, inspire discussion about excellence in design, planning, and preservation, and broaden awareness of the rich architectural and cultural traditions found in Baltimore communities. The event has grown significantly, doubling attendance in 2015 and expanding the number of participating sites and activities. 2,000 visitors are expected to participate in Doors Open Baltimore 2016. A diverse selection of building types and neighborhoods will be represented, from the remnants of Baltimore’s colonial past in Jonestown and Fells Point to the grand Victorian homes and churches in Central and West Baltimore; from the factories along the Jones Falls to Baltimore’s bustling downtown. Thirsty Thursdays at the Engineers Club Ambers, Aria, & IPAsThursday, September 15 Baltimore Concert Opera popular series returns this season, Thirsty Thursdays at the Opera. Top-flight professional opera singers will perform operatic highlights paired with energetic and informative commentary and fun facts about themselves, and each performance will feature beer, wine or whiskey tastings interspersed throughout the evening specially planned to go with the music. The events will be casual, relaxed evenings in our beautiful, inviting atmosphere in the Grand Ballroom of the Engineers Club in the heart of Mount Vernon. $25 admission includes tasting and music! New Restaurant The Elephant is Open on Charles StreetAfter several years of renovations, the Elephant is open in the storied building that once housed the Brass Elephant. Owners Steven Rivelis and Linda Brown Rivelis have updated the space to include modern color palettes, fixtures and furniture, while still paying tribute to the architectural and artistic elements of the historic mansion. The first floor incorporates a main dining room, bar, “Atrium Room” and kitchen (diners can book up to six seats inside the kitchen), and the Marble Bar and two lounges are on the second floor. The Elephant is open at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with the last dinner seating at 10 p.m. and the last pour at midnight. The menu, which will rotate constantly, offers globally inspired cuisine, with dishes such as crispy duck and watermelon salad, cedar plank salmon, summer lamb tangine and Singapore rice noodles. Howards Park Dog Park Needs VolunteersPlease consider volunteering to help maintain our new dog park. Nine volunteers have already been trained and are currently working to maintain the park, but we need more volunteers so that people will only have to work one shift every two weeks. Brown is co-owner and operator of two cafes in the city’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District: Station North Arts Café Gallery and Nancy by SNAC. Other upcoming demonstrations include Charlotte Galley, demonstrating the ease of market-to-table on Sunday, August 21st. Demos are held near the Saratoga Street entrance.
